Super-De-Duper Ginger Tea

Ginger tea is a nighttime ritual in my apartment. For the past year or so I have been drinking ginger tea pretty often, usually Yogi brand. However several months ago my boyfriend was craving ginger tea and I only had fresh ginger and not ginger tea bags (random, I know). So we chopped up some ginger and pour some hot water over it and wam bam a tradition was made. We make fresh ginger tea as often as possible, usually at least 5 nights a week. His is traditional, 100% ginger and water while I add a various assortment of accessories to mine.

Because I can't just leave enough alone and always have to take something healthy to the next level, I usually add raw honey, lemon, and turmeric. Pro-tip: when using turmeric, use a metal utensil to scoop out turmeric or else your finger/plastic/whatever will turn orange semi-permanently or permanently. Same with a mug- do not use a mug with a white interior! That's why I use my "I am a great singer!" mug every night, because A) the color is such as you cannot see a stain, and B) I'm just such a great singer ;)

Ginger is delicious (and if you do dislike ginger, you might want to skip over this recipe, ha). When going out for sushi I eat alllll the ginger on my plate in two bites (and I finish off all my friends' left over ginger too). Ginger tastes great but is even better for your body. So eat all the ginger!!

Ingredients:
1 cup hot water
1 tablespoon freshly and finely chopped ginger*
1 lemon wedge
1/4 teaspoon raw honey
1/4+ teaspoon organic turmeric powder (as much as you can stand!)

1. Boil the water.
2. Place the chopped ginger in a tea leaf strainer.
3. Add turmeric over the ginger in the tea strainer and place strainer in mug.
4. Squeeze lemon into mug. 
5. Pour water into mug and mix the raw honey in.

In will probably burn. Hopefully in a good way... I think so at least! I know my mom would absolutely HATE it though, so it's definitely a personal preference, especially with the turmeric. 
 

*Chop the ginger as you need it, do not chop a bunch at a time to use another day. I tried that and it is SEVERELY less ginger-y.

Apple cider vinegar. An acquired taste, that's for sure. I drink 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar a day mixed in a large glass of water either with breakfast or dinner. I've been doing that for months and months. However, the past four weeks I've been battling on and off with a cold, and it's been quite frustrating. I'm sleeping loads, drinking plenty, eating well... oooof. Anyway, Apple Cider Vinegar, Ginger, and Honey all have healing properties so I figured I'd give this a shot for a week or so! I tried Bragg's version of this drink a few times and really enjoyed it but forgot about it until the other day when I was in the organic store. This caught my eye and I wondered how close I could get to the manufactured version. I think I did pretty well!! The only difference is that they use stevia extract instead of honey. I used honey for two reasons 1) I have honey, I don't have stevia 2) Honey is supposedly/potentially better for your digestion when not hot, i.e. not in tea. Since there are many potential healthy properties and there really isn't any possible negative outcome, why not give it a shot? Let me know if you try this and if you have any results!

I've read about the possible health  benefits of apple cider vinegar, ginger, and honey on multiple occasions in multiple articles and such. Here is a breakdown of only some of the potential benefits of these ingredients:

Apple Cider Vinegar (I use Bragg Organic Raw, Unfiltered ACV) >helps soothe sore throats >aids in digestion and helps digestive issues >helps sinuses>helps to clear skin

Ginger (organic) >also helps sinuses >nausea >reduces gas >soothe throat irritation >anti-inflammatory properties

Honey (raw and local if possible)>helps with acid reflux >minimizes seasonal allergies >anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties >soothes coughs

Serves: 1 Prep time: 3 minutes + overnight in fridge

Ingredients: 1 teaspoon of very finely grated peeled fresh ginger (about a 1/2" knub) 1 1/2 cups filtered water 2 teaspoons raw honey 1 tablespoon ACV

1. Put grated ginger in the glass with the water, honey, and apple cider vinegar. 2. Shake and keep in the fridge overnight. 3. Drink up!

I made this spiced + mulled apple cider on Sunday (not today) when I had a few people over for my second annual pumpkin carving gathering. We made these bad boys:

This cider was gone so fast that I totally didn't even take a pretty picture in a pretty mug for you. My sincerest apologies. Since I failed, I strongly suggest that you make this yourself and take a pretty picture of it and send it to me instead.

Serves: 6-8 people
Total time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 gallon apple cider (choose a brand where the only ingredients is organic apples!)
  • 1/2 a large orange
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 2 whole allspice

Add 1/2-1 cup of Rum if you wanna let loose ;) I added Dominican rum that I brought back from vacay. Dooooiiiiit.

1. Put the burner on low heat. Pour in apple cider into a large pot. Toss in the cinnamon sticks, cloves, and allspice. Squeeze the juice from half of an orange. Then pull apart the orange and throw it all in.
2. Add in the rum if you're making it alcoholic. (It's miighty miiiighty tasty)
3. Let it simmer until you're ready to sip, sip away! Keep it on low until it's all gone. (Don't worry, it wont take long).

Okay. So I lied. There is no peanut butter in this recipe. Peanut butter is bad, well peanuts are. Therefor by the transitive property, peanut butter is bad. It's all math n science y'all. Instead of peanut butter I used sunbutter... I'd argue that it is even BETTER than peanut butter. Better tasting and certainly better for you.

So I'm back to CrossFitting! It's been a boring 8 weeks without CrossFit, but I'm baaaaack, and boy does it feel good!! And therefor I've been smoothie-ing it up! Man I missed smoothies. I usually workout in the AM on a (nearly) empty stomach. So I've been protein-shaking at the box post WOD, but when I get home I wanna eat.. but my schedule is GROSS and usually I have to go to sleep because I'm working overnight or something like that. So a large lunch(?) is not appreciated right before bed. Enter: protein packed SMOOTHIE.

Question: Why do frozen raspberries turn a purple color after they blend???

Serves: 1
Prep time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup frozen raspberries (2.5g protein)
  • 1 frozen banana (1.3g protein)
  • 1 Cup unsweetened almond milk (1g protein)
  • 1 tablespoon grass-fed water soluble gelatin (6g protein)
  • 1.5 tablespoon sunbutter (5g protein)
  • *Optional: 1 serving of protein powder (~20-26g protein)

1. Add all ingredients into a blender or magic bullet. Add the gelatin last.
2. Drink up buttercup.

That's a buttload of healthy natural protein! You can add your preferred protein powder to this concoction as well, I don't because I have that separately. Again, I generally eat a smoothie when either I'm running out the door and don't have time to cook, or when my schedule is a disaster.

What better way to cool off a long shweaty hot summer day than with a Watermelon Fauxjito? Now, this is not a mojito, there is no alcohol or sugar found here. I just associate refreshing drinks with mint in them as mojito's. 0:)

Serves: 1
Prep time: 4 minutes
Cook time: 0 minutes

Ingredients:

1 C fresh seedless watermelon
1/4 C coconut water
1 ice cube (bonus points: coconut water ice cube)
~20 mint leafs (1 sprig)

1. In the glass you will be drinking from, muddle your mint leafs until they are itty bitty bits of mint.
2. In a small food processor or Magic Bullet type gadget, combine watermelon, ice, coconut water. Blend together until the ice has broken down.
3. Pour watermelon drink into glass. Mix the mint around with your straw... and slurp it up (in AC!)
